As long as the beams are horizontal, their axis can withstand loads that are applied laterally from their centre. Vertically arranged members transfer compressive loads to the horizontal members.

Building steel-head-framed buildings uses similar techniques as building wood-frame buildings. This type of frame consists of curved or straight members that are interconnected and can support axial loads, shear loads, and bending moments.
